Spring cleaning is home filter checking time. Why? Spring cleaning is part of our culture, and checking your residential filter should be part of your routine home maintenance. After all, when is the last time you checked your home HVAC filter? Do you need a Replacement filter? When? How can you tell?
Changing the HVAC Filter: How Often Should You Change It?
Unfortunately, there is no quick universal answer, which is why checking your home filter is so important. How often you should change the HVAC filter on your home system depends on many things:
- Busy street? If you live within a 1/4-mile of a busy street, your filters are busy.
- Suburbs? What a lovely garden! But aren’t those lovely flowers ragweed?
- Pets. Homes with a dog or other pets may also find that they need to change the filters more frequently since most air filters are great at trapping pet hair, but pet hair can really clog up a filter quickly!
- Do you use your unit a lot? If you go straight from heat to AC, check your residential filter.
The owner’s manual for your system will list suggested replacement schedules. Take a look at the filters, too. If they look dirty, chances are good that they are dirty. Replacement filters changed at the start of the air conditioning season is a good way to ensure that your system works efficiently and your indoor air is kept as clean as it possibly can be.
Finding Replacement Filters
As with any home maintenance task, make sure you have the right tools for the job handy before starting the project. Replacement filters are available from Twin City Filter Service. Refer to the owner’s manual for the filter part number, or look inside the door or cover of the filter screen. Many systems list the part numbers on the inside of the door covering the unit, or on the inside of the filter screen itself.
